Mechanical engineering roles across the Gulf split broadly into design/office-based work and site-based installation, commissioning and maintenance work — the two paths call for a different day-to-day skill set.
Design and office-based roles
These roles focus on equipment selection, system design (such as HVAC or piping systems), technical documentation and CAD drafting. Proficiency in relevant design software and a strong grasp of applicable engineering codes are usually central requirements.
Site-based installation and maintenance roles
These positions involve hands-on equipment installation, commissioning, preventive maintenance and fault diagnosis on active project sites or operating facilities. Site experience in the Gulf — particularly on oil and gas or large industrial projects — is frequently a specific requirement, since standards and working conditions differ from other regions.
What strengthens a mechanical engineering application
A relevant engineering degree is the baseline requirement across almost all listings. Beyond that, employers weigh direct experience with the specific equipment or systems involved (rotating equipment, HVAC, piping, etc.), and for QC-adjacent mechanical roles, inspection or NDT certifications are a strong addition.
